Moscow was founded in 1147 and has a population of over 15 million inhabitants. Moscow is not only the business centre of Russia, but also home of the most flamboyant Russian gay venues, though the scene is not stable with venues changing frequently. Even though public attitude towards homosexuality in Moscow is quite tolerant, it is advisable to refrain from public display of affection (whereas e. g. kissing in the street, holding hands etc).

In Russia, homosexuality between consenting adults is legal with age of consent set at 16. Prostitution is legal for clients. Sex workers risk an administrative offence. Make sure you don’t pick up anyone below the age of 18. Always carry your passport with valid visa and ensure that you are registered within 3 days of your arrival.

Being gay has become relatively safe in Moscow and St. Petersburg where the gay commercial scene is a little developed. In other cities, the gay life is at best underground or at worst non-existent. Often, it consists of public cruising areas, popular cafes or, occasionally small groups. In the last three years, gay activists worked hard to change the image of homosexuals that was biased thanks to a few openly gay transvestites. Russian Gay activist scene has received wide media coverage since 2005 when Project GayRussia lead by Nikolai Alekseev entered into a fight with the Mayor of Moscow who denied them the right to stage their first Gay Pride. Despite all bans, activists took the streets every May starting in 2006 provoking harsh reactions from fanatics. In 2009, gay pride will be conducted on May 16th, the day of the Eurovision final which takes place in Moscow. In 2007, Putin expressed first official view on homosexuality by declaring that he respects freedom in all its forms.
