Participants called the Russian government to fight discrimination against HIV+ citizens

A group of 9 gay and lesbian activists held a protest in the centre of St Petersburg last Saturday to celebrate the World Aids Day. Their action which aimed to attract attention of the society and the government to the problem of stigmatization and discrimination against HIV positive citizens was authorized by the city administration.
The protest was supported by the LGBT Human Rights Group GayRussia.Ru which also took part in it.
The group lead by Maria Efremenkova and Alexander Sheremetev was holding posters and handing over leaflets asking for "Tolerance", "Be Human" and "We can play together". They also distributed red ribbons to people in the street. Efremenkova a local lesbian activist is known for the organization of several public actions including recently, a picket in support of same sex marriage.
Speaking to local media, activists reminded the words of the former UN General Secretary Kofi Annan who once said that "The most powerful weapon against stigmatization and silence are the voices of people speaking openly about HIV(…) Instead of stigmatization we should offer support, instead of fear – hope, and instead of silence – solidarity".
In an email statement distributed before the action, the organizers said that "We understand how difficult it is to be open with your life in a society which cultivates myths and prejudice. But we realize that it is only by being open that one can fight stigmatization and assert his rights. We express our solidarity with HIV positive people among which are a significant number of homosexuals. It is even more difficult for them because of the State homophobia."
The activists further stressed that "Prevention and education directed to homosexuals and bisexuals is non existent from governmental agencies. Doctors do not know how to properly advise homosexual patients. The efforts of NGOs are clearly insufficient. We urge the government to fight stigmatization and to respect the rights of citizens."
Participants received a positive welcome from the crowd and no incidents were recorded.
Today, HIV positive foreign citizens are still not allowed to settle in Russia.
